“Casting By” — HBO Documentary About Casting Directors

Anyone who cares about movies should see “Casting By,” a new documentary on HBO about casting directors.  It is a rare opportunity to see early glimpses of some of the greatest actors live in their first roles and even never-seen before audition tapes.  But more important, it is a chance to understand the influence of casting directors like the pioneering Marion Dougherty, who championed actors like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and John Travolta and literally changed the face of movies.

In the early studio days, actors were primarily chosen for their looks, including the indefinable “screen presence.”  They were under contract, and when it came time to make a movie they would often pick whoever was available from their list of in-house talent.  They would train them in-house as well.  “They used what people looked like physically to define the character…Can we fix the nose, can we fix the teeth?  Last on the list was ‘can they act?'”

The end of the studio era coincided with a change in story-telling on film that opened the door for New York stage-trained actors who looked less like leading men and more like real people, actors who understood a new kind of acting based on “inner being, emotional truth.”  The movies were ready for “great actors as opposed to the Hollywood star-making system.”  That was where Dougherty came in.  She began casting for live television, a trial by fire that was the perfect foundation for getting to know the actors and the business.  It is touching to hear the gratitude of the actors she helped.  “She can see what other people can’t see,” we learn.  “Even before you see it in yourself,” adds Danny Glover.

Martin Scorsese’s enchanting “Hugo” is a thrillingly immersive adventure.  It is about two orphans trying to solve a mystery.  It is about the way that stories help us make sense of life.  It stretches from the very beginnings of movies and the transformation of images through imagination into pure magic to technological advances that go beyond anything we’ve ever seen before.  Scorsese, perhaps the greatest living master of cinematic storytelling and certainly the most passionate movie fan in history, waited until he and the medium reached a point where 3D was ready to be more than a stunt and become an integral element of the story and with his first film for families he stretches the frame in ways it has never been used before.

It is based on the Caldecott award winning book by Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is a Parisian orphan in the early 20th century who lives in the train station.  His inventor father (Jude Law) was killed in a fire, so he came to live with his drunken uncle (Ray Winstone), who wound and maintained the clocks at the station and slept in a little forgotten room inside the clockworks.  Now the uncle has disappeared and Hugo is trying to keep the clocks going so no one will suspect that his uncle is gone.  He is also trying to hide from the station inspector (Sasha Baron Cohen), a WWI veteran with an injured hand and leg who likes to catch stray children and send them to the orphanage.  Most of all, he is trying to repair a mysterious robotic machine that his father found in a museum.

They had been working on it together and with the help of his father’s notebook and the gears from some toys he has stolen from the station’s toy shop he is getting close.  But then the proprietor of the toy shop (Ben Kingsley) has confiscated the notebook.  The proprietor’s adopted daughter, the book-loving Isabelle (Chloë Grace Moretz of “Kick-Ass”) who is hoping for an adventure, holds the key to the mystery in more ways than one. From the opening moment, with ticking sounds that surround us as Hugo peeks out from the number 4 on a huge clock dial.  The intricate pendulums, gears, and catwalks hidden inside the upper reaches of the station are enthralling, with brilliant production design by Dante Ferretti that seems to surround us.

Occasionally Scorsese will tease us a bit with 3D effects — the inspector’s nose is one example.  But more often it is subtly done.  Dust motes glisten several feet in front of the screen to create a sustained illusion of depth. The children’s search takes them to the movies and then to a library where they research the brief history of cinema from its invention by the Lumière brothers and the early audiences who jumped when they saw a train coming toward them on the screen.  They see Harold Lloyd hanging from the hands of a giant clock in “Safety Last” and we get glimpses of classics from Buster Keaton’s “The General” to D.W. Griffith’s “Intolerance.”  And they meet a film scholar who has the last piece of the puzzle. Scorsese and screenwriter John Logan make the children’s adventure and the movie history mesh like the gears that operate the station clocks and the result is a rare story with something for every age.  Scorsese lingers too long on Butterfield’s face and some of the other images and some of the scenes could be trimmed, but by the time it all comes together in a joyous celebration of film it is clear that the ultimate tribute to the cinematic giants is standing on their shoulders. Television: Fall Preview 2010

The fall season of television begins this week and there’s a lot to look forward to, from returning favorites to intriguing new shows. Here are some of the shows I’m most excited about.

“Glee” returns with episodes celebrating Britney Spears and “The Rocky Horror Show.” New cast members include Charice Pempengco, who captivated Oprah and Celine Dion with her big voice and sweet personality.

Can’t wait for the new seasons of “Modern Family” and “The Good Wife” as well.

I got an intriguing glimpse of “The Event” at Comic-Con. Blair Underwood plays the President of the United States in a paranoid puzzler of a thriller that could be the new “Lost.” The supporting cast includes top talent Laura Innes, Jason Ritter, and Zeljko Ivanek.

I love glamorous romantic adventure, so I am looking forward to “Undercovers,” with the gorgeous Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a married couple who once were spies and are still gets called by the CIA for special project. I am sure those projects will involve exotic locations and sexy banter. Can’t wait!

I have had a weakness for lawyer shows since the original “Perry Mason” and there are a bunch of news ones this year. I’m looking forward to “The Defenders” with Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell and co-starring one of my favorite young actors, Jurnee Smollet. The Las Vegas setting should give them some interesting cases. And I’m glad to see Tom Selleck returning in “Blue Bloods,” about a family of law enforcement officials, including Bridget Moynahan and former NKTB-er Donnie Walhberg.

But the show I am most excited about is Martin’s Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire, written by “The Soprano’s” Terence Winter. Set in Prohibition era Atlantic City, it stars Steve Buscemi as a political fixer who is part politician and part gangster. It features a powerhouse cast from the big screen including Michael Stuhlbarg (“A Serious Man”) Gretchen Mol (“The Notorious Bettie Page”), Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Michael Pitt (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”).
