Interviews: Jewish Views on Sex and Intimacy in “The Lost Key”

“The Lost Key” is a documentary that explores contemporary society’s confusion of sex and intimacy, and how the ancient principles from Jewish theology can restore the holy connection between husbands and wives. I spoke to director Ricardo Adler, whose own divorce inspired him to explore these traditions, and Rabbi Manis Friedman, who introduced him to Kabbalah’s ancient secrets to attain the highest form of intimacy. The film portrays the dramatic transformation of Ricardo’s new marriage, and the reactions of other couples to this revolutionary way to sexual connection. Adler says that “‘The Lost Key’ reveals forgotten wisdom that could inspire society to rediscover intimacy, one bedroom at a time.”

I asked Adler how he got started with this project.

Adler: I grew up in just a regular, modern, traditional, secular Jewish home. And at some point when I was getting divorced, as the film says, I just decided to start exploring different things, and I ended up discovering that in my own Jewish roots there’s all the answers I need in life. In fact, a lot of the things that I discovered in Judaism and in Kabbalah include some of the ideas that I used to like about other belief systems. You know, Buddhism, Taoism, and etc, so that was kind of nice. And then that process, you start going to school and meeting rabbis and talking to different types of people. After about a year of having started that process, the local Chabad house here in Venezuela organized a shabbaton with Manis Friedman. So he came down, and I must say, I was fascinated by him and his talks and just the way he conveys the knowledge. In fact, he gave one talk where he answered a question I was asking myself for over 20 years, which is,
“What’s the purpose of life? Why are we here?” In one hour, he answered a 20 year search. So I just loved him. So I proposed the idea to him and to my surprise he said yes. And here we are.

What is the difference between sex and intimacy?

Rabbi Friedman: So the difference is a number of things. Number one, what we’re referring to generally, casually to as sex is impersonal. It’s an activity, it’s a performance, it’s a thing. It’s something you do. And this thing can be good, it can be bad, it could be better, it could be worse, like anything. Intimacy means connecting person to person beyond all things. So if we have to put it in a simple phrase, the lost key is the ability to connect to a person beyond all things, which is really what we all want and need.

Why do we get so many contrary messages?

Rabbi Friedman: Actually I think that the experts of the mental health field very recently are saying that it was a mistake to emphasize the pleasure of the relationship and to make people paranoid about whether they’re getting the maximum pleasure, the greatest pleasure, the 25 new secrets to greater sex, constant, constant bombardment, when in fact, people don’t really need more pleasure, they need closeness. Because with all the freedom that we have, and with all the openness on the subject, I think Americans are pretty much, and even so-called happily married couples, the moment they’re quiet and sober, they would admit that they basically feel alone. It’s a very lonely society. Even though we’re very social and we’re very cosmopolitan and we’re outgoing, everything is open, everything is free and casual, but in the end, we feel alone. Because until relate intimately, we really are isolated and alone.

Adler: I think this started with the so-called sexual revolution of the 60’s which emphasized pleasure-based sex and you should have sex with as many people as you want and all this stuff. And then that led to a sexual invasion of society. Sex is used to sell everything. And so that’s what sells because it’s an emotional directive. They are talking to something that is very dear, very important and intimate to any human being, and that’s the pleasure of sex. So it sells, it works, that’s who we are today. The story’s not over. Here we come, hopefully, with a different message. And it’s not just us. I think there’s a lot of people that are really looking at sexuality views today and just saying there’s something wrong here. I mean, if sexuality is your number 1 cause for divorce, along with financial issues, there’s something going on, right? We have a new thing called sexual addictions we didn’t have before. Something’s going on. You have all these young people with these self-esteem problems; something’s going on. We think it’s the lack of intimacy in sexuality.

The adults in the film seem to know very little about intimacy. Who should teach kids and teenagers about this? And when?

Rabbi Friedman: It should be the parents or the teachers. It shouldn’t be a secret subject, a taboo subject that you have to find an expert to talk to your children about it. It should be a natural part of life. You don’t sit your children down and your child and say, “We’re going to have the talk. Now you’re old enough or whatever it is and we’re gonna have the talk.” That sends a bad message. Why don’t you just talk about it the way you talk about anything else in casual conversation? I don’t mean make it casual. It’s not different from the rest of life. You don’t have “the talk” about money, you don’t have “the talk” about jobs, about career, it comes up in casual conversation—you talk about it. So you hear a story of kids who got in trouble or whatever, so you talk about it. It’s not “the talk”. Don’t treat it like something other than life itself.

In the film you talk about not having any devices like phones or television in the bedroom. How do couples create physical and emotional space for intimacy?

Rabbi Friedman: If the bedroom is sacred, then walking into the bedroom actually supports the intimacy that you’re going to engage in because it promotes that feeling of intimacy. You set it aside for that purpose and that kind of generates that kind of energy. So when a husband and a wife walk into a bedroom and close the door, it creates an intimate atmosphere, an intimate mood that supports the emotions that you’re supposed to feel but you can’t always. So you come into a bedroom with all sorts of concerns and distractions, and you’re worried about your bills and you’re worried about your job and you’re worried about your extended family, and now all of a sudden you have to focus to become intimate? That’s not easy. So if you can have some support from the room, from the environment, from the atmosphere, it’s very helpful. I mean, you need help. You do. We all need help to achieve intimacy.

Are there lessons in the film for those who are not Jewish?

Adler: The film is for any married couple. The idea is that you are one before you got married and you can reclaim that oneness within marriage. So intimacy is for any couple whether you are Jewish or non-Jewish, old or young, black or white etc. etc. If you are married you can be intimate. You can have a beautiful healthy marriage and this is one way to get there.

Rabbi Friedman: Absolutely, absolutely. I mean, just thinking about the benefits to the children born from the relationship. When husband and wife are truly focused on each other, it invites the baby into a world in a much healthier way than if the baby is an afterthought. Nothing you get from your spouse can be more important than your spouse. And that includes love, the love you get from him is not as important as him, otherwise you’re married to love. And it includes the physical pleasure of intimacy, because if that’s what you’re looking for, then you’re married to it, not to him. And also, the difference between sex and intimacy is that after sex, you feel a little diminished. You feel a little loss of dignity or self-respect or respect for the person you’re with. It’s just the nature of the behavior of the act that it takes you down a little. Whereas intimacy, after you’ve experience intimacy, each time you feel more innocent than before. Because to be intimate, you have to get past all things to just be you and I, the I and thou, and that is the most innocent part of ourselves.

Emma Stone finally gets the breakthrough role her fans have been waiting for in “Easy A.” This is the moment that takes her into the front rank of movie stars, sub-category: America’s sweetheart.

Stone has an immediately appealing presence on screen, unpretentious but utterly charming. Here she plays Olive, a girl who doesn’t yet realize that all of the things that make her feel invisible in high school are going to make her wildly beloved for decades after. She is impatient to be “interesting” and so after a thrill-less weekend highlighted by singing along to a greeting card she impulsively tells her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) that she had sex with her college student boyfriend. Problem #1: the sex and the boyfriend are both imaginary. This is the kind of mistake a teenager would make. Problem #2: this confession occurs in the ladies’ room at the high school, with no checking the stalls. This is not the kind of mistake anyone would make after 7th grade, but we have to kick that plot into gear, now, don’t we?

And so the whole school immediately knows and believes this scandalous news. Which is why Olive’s closeted gay friend tired of getting picked on comes to her with a proposition. Not that kind. He wants her to have noisy public pretend sex with him so that he can be definitively proven manly. And since her reputation is already shot, what can it hurt? And why not do the same favor for some other needy souls? And then, when it seems the whole school is judging her (conveniently, her class is reading The Scarlet Letter), she decides to sew a big red A on a bustier and see what it feels like to go from invisible to un-missable.

Stone is such an effortless charmer that she keeps the story aloft, even when Olive inexplicably turns her little adventure into a for-pay enterprise, insisting on gift cards(!) in exchange for making the reputation of the guys involved at the cost of her own. A side story involving Olive’s favorite teacher (Thomas Hayden Church) and his wife, the school guidance counselor (Lisa Kudrow) is also unnecessarily tawdry. Far better are the encounters with the always delectable (and just about always underused) Amanda Bynes as the school holier-than-thou abstinence proponent and the always ultra-watchable Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive’s deliciously off-kilter parents. Their scenes are warm, witty, and surprising, and livelier than Olive’s romantic ups and downs. In every way, it is Stone who is the heart of this movie, and she wins our hearts as well.

Is ‘Coraline’ Too Scary for Kids?

It is always a challenge to guide parents about how scary a movie is, but it is especially difficult with this week’s release of “Coraline,” the 3D stop-motion animated film based on a popular book for children by Neil Gaiman. By coincidence, Gaiman was just awarded this year’s top prize for children’s literature, the Newberry award, for The Graveyard Book, the story of a boy raised by ghosts.
SPOILER ALERT: There are ghosts in “Coraline,” too, plus a very scary insect-like predator who likes to replace children’s eyes with sewn-on black buttons and many other macabre and grotesque images. But is that scarier than “A Series of Unfortunate Events” or “The Wizard of Oz” or the Narnia movies? Is it scarier than Disney movies like “Bambi” or “The Lion King” (both feature the death of a parent) or fairy tales like “Hansel and Gretel” or “Snow White?”
Some of the commenters on this blog think so, and have noted sharply that they think this movie is too scary for younger children. The Motion Picture Association’s ratings board gave it a PG. I originally recommended it for 4th grade and up but on reflection have changed it to middle school and up, though when I saw the film again last night there were younger children in the audience who seemed to be doing fine with it.
There are many kinds of scary material and every kid reacts differently to every one of them. Some are disturbed by tension and peril but don’t mind battle scenes. Some get very upset when an animal is injured but don’t blink an eye when a human character is killed. Some kids react because they are sensitive about events going on in their own lives, loss of a grandparent or a pet, a move, or divorce.
In “Coraline,” some kids may be rattled by the images in this film like the skeletal designs of one (good) character’s helmet and gloves or the increasingly spidery appearance of the villain. Some may be upset by the themes of the film that includes the ghosts of three eyeless and devoured children. Some will be very reassured by the brave and resilient heroine, finding it exciting but not disturbing.
The New York Times’ A. O. Scott led off his review of “Coraline” with some thoughts on its capacity to scare its young audience:

There are many scenes and images in “Coraline” that are likely to scare children. This is not a warning but rather a recommendation, since the cultivation of fright can be one of the great pleasures of youthful moviegoing. As long as it doesn’t go too far toward violence or mortal dread, a film that elicits a tingle of unease or a tremor of spookiness can be a tonic to sensibilities dulled by wholesome, anodyne, school-approved entertainments.

This brings us back to the enduring appeal of scary stories. Children have read millions of scary books from R.L. Stine and Lemony Snicket and teenagers have bought millions of tickets to the “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and “Saw” series. The top box office films of all time include scary stories like “Jaws,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Silence of the Lambs.” Even family-friendly G-rated films like “Finding Nemo,” “Babe,” and “The Sound of Music” have scary parts. That is because one of the reasons we tell and read and watch stories is because they give us a way to understand and conquer our fears. It will always be difficult for parents to determine what will be too scary for their children. I will do my best to describe what I see and provide some guidance but ultimately the decision can only be made by the ones who know the child best. And ultimately, parents must realize that sometimes a part of seeing a movie is being unsettled and learning to resolve those feelings.
P.S. “Coraline” also has a burlesque performance with two fat, elderly ladies in tiny little costumes that turn out to zip off, revealing younger, lither performers inside. How should a parent evaluate that on a scale of nudity or sexual material? Because it was comic and because it turned out not to be “real,” but a humorous fat suit, I described it as “brief comic nudity (skimpy costume).” I welcome other suggestions and reactions.

The Washington Post reports on the first study to link teen pregnancies to sexual content on television. The study is being published today in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The authors found a “strong association” between teen pregnancy and watching sexual activity in television programs.
Teenagers who watch a lot of television featuring flirting, necking, discussion of sex and sex scenes are much more likely than their peers to get pregnant or get a partner pregnant, according to the first study to directly link steamy programming to teen pregnancy.
The study, which tracked more than 700 12-to-17-year-olds for three years, found that those who viewed the most sexual content on TV were about twice as likely to be involved in a pregnancy as those who saw the least….
Studies have found a link between watching television shows with sexual content and becoming sexually active earlier, and between sexually explicit music videos and an increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases. And many studies have shown that TV violence seems to make children more aggressive. But the new research is the first to show an association between TV watching and pregnancy among teens.
The problem with these studies is always cause and effect. Do teenagers who are already sexually active or considering becoming sexually active tend to watch more of these programs or do these programs promote unprotected sexual activity?
It is stupid to suggest that media does not affect behavior, especially of teenagers who are just beginning to look beyond the home and school for guidance on behavior. There is a billion-dollar industry devoted to the impact of media on behavior — it is called advertising. Television programming may not be selling clothes or toothpaste, but it is always selling a notion of what is — and is not — cool. And that does affect the choices made by viewers.
