Teacher Giveaway: The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

Posted on July 1, 2010 at 3:51 pm

I’ve got something very special for the first teacher to write me — directions below. At the American Library Association’s annual conference in Washington DC last weekend I attended a reception in honor of The Cat in the Hat and his new television series about science for PBS, starting this fall. IMG_8053.JPG
Dr. Seuss revolutionized books for early readers with his riotously entertaining stories, classics that are beloved by generations like The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Lorax, Yertle the Turtle, Horton Hears a Who, and many more. Now, in partnership with PBS, The Cat in the Hat will help preschoolers and early readers learn about science. The Cat’s voice will be provided by the perfectly appropriate Martin Short. He will guide best friends Sally and Nick through stories that will teach children vocabulary, science facts, and the fun of curiosity. And he will have help, of course, from Thing One and Thing Two, the red Fish, and a Thinga-ma-jigger vehicle that adapts to become whatever transportation the group needs to explore the world. PBS will make resources available for parents and educators to provide support, encouragement, and coordinate with curriculum.
I have a beautiful Cat in the Hat canvas tote bag with two Dr. Seuss science books and some information about the show to give to the first PreK-1st Grade teacher who writes to me at moviemom@moviemom.com to tell me your favorite Dr. Seuss character and why. Good luck and thanks for all you do for your students and their families!

Be a Movie Critic for Ovation TV

Posted on June 23, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Want to be a movie critic? Here’s your chance! Ovation TV is showing some certified classics this summer and inviting viewers to submit their reviews. They will show landmark films from big-time directors like David Lynch, Francis Ford Coppola and his daughter Sofia, Peter Bogdanovich, Woody Allen, and many more. These are movies that critics adore. Are they right? Ovation wants to know what you think about these films — Pioneering? Overrated? Better than “Citizen Kane?” Worse than “Howard the Duck?” The films include “Wall Street,” “Harold and Maude,” “The Conversation,” “The Producers,” “The Virgin Suicides,” and “Sweet and Lowdown.” Love them or hate them, send in a 1-minute video of your critique, get your friends to vote for you, and you just might see it broadcast on the air.
To get your opinions seen and heard on national TV, simply log in to the Ovation community, and upload your critique video anytime from June 22-July 12. Ovation will select the best videos with the most votes to air on TV between July 25-31. So sign up and get critiquing today!

Great Dads on Film and TV

Great Dads on Film and TV

Posted on June 15, 2010 at 3:58 pm

My gallery of great movie dads and list of daddy-daughter movies include wonderful films for families to watch together and talk about the great fathers in their own families.

Some of the best dads on film appear on television, which allows us to see families in a variety of circumstances over many years. Some of them even start to feel like members of our own families. These dads are not perfect but they always seem to know the right thing to say, whether comforting, guiding, or providing support. And they inspire even more through their own examples of trustworthiness and wisdom. My favorites include:

1. Tom Bosley on “Happy Days
2. John Goodman on “Roseanne.”
3. Andy Griffith on “The Andy Griffith Show
4. Danny Thomas on “Make Room for Daddy
5. Bil Cosby on “The Cosby Show
6. Bill Bixby on “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”

7. John Amos on “Good Times”
8. Michael Landon on “Little House on the Prairie”
9. Robert Young on “Father Knows Best”
10. Peter Gallagher in “The OC”
