An overly optimistic, yet inept, alien race named Boov, led by Captain Smek, invades Earth to hide from their mortal enemy and make it a new home.Convinced they are doing a favour, they begin to relocate the human race, but one resourceful girl, Tip (Rhianna), manages to avoid capture. When on the run, she is accompanied by a banished Boov, named Oh (Jim Parsons), who has accidentally notified the enemies of his whereabouts. Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez co-star.

The Present NOT to Buy Your Children Next Christmas

Dreamworks is teaming up with Fuhu, the maker of tablets  for children to create the first tablet in which the content provider controls what the user sees.  In other words, it’s more like a television.  While Amazon sensibly makes sure that its Kindle Fire line gives parents control over the content available to children — and lets them set daily time limits as well — Fuhu gives parents no control at all.

The partnership is a convergence of two business trends. With children as young as 2 or 3 now routinely using their parents’ iPads or smartphones — if the toddlers don’t already have their own — technology companies are racing to introduce gadgets made for smaller and smaller hands. Fuhu itself sold more than two million Nabis in 2013, and its tablets, which are primarily designed for children 6 to 11, now collectively deliver more than 20 million video streams a week.

Entertainment companies have been surprised at how speedily children have taken to tablets, sometimes forgoing TV sets altogether. As a result, DreamWorks, Disney and their competitors are searching for ways to make it easier for users to find their characters on portable devices.

According to the New York Times piece, “Nancy Bernstein, a movie producer who is in charge of creating what she calls ‘character moments’ for the DreamTab, insists that the effort is not simply an advertising opportunity for the studio.”  That is absurd.  Giving content providers control over the characters and images children see is advertising.  Even if the penguins from Madagascar are not specifically promoting a new sequel or toy, they reinforce brand loyalty, which is the whole point of the arrangement.  I’m not in favor of tablets for children to begin with, but this is really a new low.

In an unlikely turn of events, Alex unintentionally shoots down Santa Claus while he’s delivering Christmas gifts. The would-be escapees come up with a plan to deliver Santa’s gifts and get themselves back to New York.

* Gift of the Night Fury (2011) – In the middle of preparing for the Viking winter holiday. Hiccup and the other Vikings of Berk from “How to Train Your Dragon” make a remarkable discovery about their dragons.

* Kung Fu Panda Holiday (2010) – Master Shifu assigns Po to host the annual Winter Feast at the Jade Palace, a very formal occasion where all the Kung Fu masters of China attend. Will Po’s father be able to help with the cooking?

Shrek Sells Out

I loved the new Shrek Forever After movie. But I was very sorry to see that the lovable big green ogre is not just living happily ever after over in Far Far Away. He is all over the mall selling everything from credit cards and breakfast cereal to junk food and greeting cards to kids and their families. It even includes “limited edition “Ogre Green” filled Twinkies.”
The press release from Dreamworks, explains that Shrek has a wide range of “partners.”
This is of course just another way to help make more money for the studio. But it is detrimental to the integrity of the product itself to commercialize it this way and it is particularly regrettable when it is attached to products that are unhealthy for children.
