Happy 100th Birthday, Charles Addams

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 8:57 pm

Google salutes the 100th anniversary of the birth of cartoonist Charles Addams with a suitably macabre Google Doodle today.

Addams created  series of delightfully ghoulish cartoons for the New Yorker, collected in books like Chas Addams Happily Ever After: A Collection of Cartoons to Chill the Heart of Your Loved One.  They inspired the classic 1960’s Addams Family television series, with Carolyn Jones and John Astin and two 1990’s feature films with Anjelica Houston and Raul Julia.

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Two preschooler favorite series have new movies released this week on DVD and On Demand.

Barney: I Love My Friends The big purple dinosaur and his friends learn some valuable lessons about what it means to be a friend — keeping promises, sharing feelings, and sticking together.  Included: a read-aloud book of hugs and a sing-along “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

I have one copy of this DVD to give away!   Send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with Barney in the subject line and tell me your favorite Barney song.  Don’t forget your address!  I’ll pick a winner at random on January 9.

Angelina Ballerina: Sweet Valentine The adorable mouse dances, skates, and sings in five episodes about love and friendship, helping each other, celebrating Ms. Mimi, and being inclusive.  Included: Angelina’s picture game and “Get Up and Dance” music video

Oscar Candidate Filmed on a Smartphone

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 8:00 am

The Wrap reports that a contender for this year’s Oscars is “Olive,” made entirely on a smart phone, a Nokia N8.  It stars two-time Oscar nominee Gena Rowlands and its song, by Ben Lear (son of television producer Norman Lear) is on the short list for this year’s best song award.  It is a family-friendly, PG-rated story of a girl who visits three troubled adults and changes their lives without speaking.

The Wrap’s story has some fascinating details about what went on behind the scenes including an eyepiece from a dismantled 1940’s camera and dollies to movie the phone smoothly.  They also had to use hoods over their heads to keep out ambient light, just like the earliest days of movie-making.
